Richmond, Virginia Parks & Outdoor Recreation

Richmond is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. Here are links to some of the City's most popular parks, as well as outdoor organizations and outfitters.

Adventure Challenge
Adventure Challenge is one of Central Virginia's leading outdoor adventure guides. This site provides information on all of their tours from snowboarding to tubing the James.

Off the Beaten Path
Compared to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Central Virginia may appear tame to the outdoor adventurer's eye. But scratch its paved, mowed or otherwise cultivated surface and you'll find more than 200 miles of trails set aside for recreational use.

Monroe Park's Perilous Past
Until recently Monroe Park has earned a reputation as a hangout for the homeless. But ask an old-time Richmonder what they recall about the park, and you'll likely hear stories of splendor and intrigue.

Birds Foot
An index of Richmond wild flowers. Descriptions include common name, botanical name and family name. Many also have high quality photos.

Canal Walk
Homepage for the revitalized Richmond Riverfront.

City of Richmond
Listings of urban parks, community centers and playgrounds

Coastal Canoeists
A kind of confusingly organized site, but worthwhile once you get your bearings. The site's best feature is its calendar of guided trips. They have something for every level of paddler.

Discover Richmond
A great break down of the James River Parks System with features of each park described briefly.

Kingcrest
Decent descriptions of two of the area's best golf courses (Country Club of VA and Willow Oaks) and the annual River Cup competition.

Lewis Ginter Gardens
Information on Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's programs, hours and admission.

Maymont
Learn about the history of Richmond's 100 acre free public park and its new nature center at the non profit organization's website. Also includes great descriptions and photos of its gardens and petting zoo.

Mountain Bike Virginia
Look for upcoming races and events. You can also subscribe to their free Virginia mountain bike activity list.

Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club
Find out how you can help repair, monitor and maintain Virginia sections of the Appalachian trail. A very functional site with useful info. like hike ratings and native wildflower descriptions.

Richmond JCC
Information on the Richmond JCC, including summer camps, schedules and membership.

Richmond Raft
Provides information on Richmond Raft Company's tours of the James. Find schedules, trip descriptions and registration information.

Virginia Society for Ornithology
The homepage for the Virginia Society for Ornithology features newsletters, rare bird alerts and a general store.
